Identity — Who You Are vs What You Do
- Authors
Topic Introduction:
Most men don’t know who they are — they know what they do.
Job, money, respect, success — that’s where identity gets built.
So when those things shake, identity shakes.
Win → you feel like a man.
Lose → you question everything.
But Scripture flips that:
Identity isn’t earned. It’s given.
If you don’t get this right, you’ll spend your life trying to prove something God already settled.
Opening Questions:
- If you lost your job and income tomorrow, what part of you would feel lost?
- Do you define yourself more by what you do or who you are?
- When you fail, do you think “I messed up” or “I am a failure”?
- Where do you feel pressure to prove yourself?
- What do you think God says about who you are?
Main Talking Points:
1. Identity Comes From Christ — Not Performance
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
You’re not an improved version of yourself.
You’re made new.
2. You Are Adopted, Not Earning Your Place
Ephesians 1:4–5 (ESV)
“Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world… In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ…”
You’re not working for acceptance.
You’re working from it.
3. Wrong Identity Leads to Performance Living
Colossians 3:3 (ESV)
“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
If identity is in performance:
- You chase validation
- You fear failure
- You burn out
If identity is in Christ:
- You operate from security
- Not for it
4. The Enemy Attacks Identity First
Matthew 4:3 (ESV)
“And the tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God…’”
Attack starts with:
“If you are…”
If you don’t know who you are, everything else gets shaky.
5. Identity Is Received, Not Discovered
Luke 9:23 (ESV)
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
Culture: “Find yourself.”
Jesus: “Deny yourself.”
Real identity is formed through surrender.
Outro (Thought and Motion)
Thought (Prompt):
Pray. This can be 5 seconds or 5 hours — it’s up to you.
Ask God:
- “Where am I trying to prove myself?”
- “What have I tied my identity to?”
- “Do I actually believe who You say I am?”
Motion (Action):
This week:
When you succeed → don’t let it define you
When you fail → don’t let it label you
Remind yourself daily:
“I am a son, not a performer.”
Act from that.
